Unconscious Preachers and the Fate of the Ummah
By Mushtaq Hurrah
A A harrowing video clip is making the rounds on various social media platforms where a young so-called Muslim preacher is seen punching one of his contemporaries in a mosque. The music video not only annoyed and saddened the masses, but sent shockwaves among the Muslim ummah. Our preachers have begun to use pulpits and sacred podiums for their vested interests and sinister purposes. Netizens registered their anger and dismay at the heartbreaking incident through various social media platforms and ridiculed the self-proclaimed preacher in the strongest terms.
Such ostensible digital preachers have brought discredit and ignominy to a class of paragon luminaries who have been the beacon of light for humanity in general and Muslims in particular. Their only motive behind the sectarian horror is quite ridiculous, lamentable and heinous. They are the melodious parrots who sing on beautiful tree branches but eat the carrion from the heaps of filth. They sold their conscience to their vainglory, public applause and absolute arrogance. They do everything possible to get more views, shares and likes on different digital platforms, to earn a few dollars. I pity those diabolical morons and their oblivious admirers who underpin their shrill slogans to please the false hierarchs and so-called ambassadors of Islam.
Renowned Islamic scholars had also had debates, but with their non-Muslim contemporaries who often denied the existence of God. The extraordinary intellect of these polymaths defeated their counterparts without resorting to verbal abuse or muscle strength. Once upon a time, a non-Muslim scholar openly challenged the great theologian and jurist – Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) to prove the existence of Allah SWT. Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) accepted the challenge and decided to teach the atheist scholar a great lesson.
The two contemporary scholars were all ready to prove their arguments in an open field. Disciples and supporters of the two scholars thronged to the place where the debate was to take place. Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) arrived at the debate site (Munazirah) a few hours late. This enraged his rival, and he sarcastically remarked, “Abu Hanifa, why did you come so late?” Are you afraid of my knowledge and my exceptional logic? Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) smiled and said, “I was sure to arrive on time but I encountered a strange and very unusual incident on the way to my destination. While walking through a jungle, I saw a big tree suddenly fall down, it broke into planks and planks on its own. Planks and planks turned into a beautiful boat. The boat slid into a nearby river and began ferrying people across the river. The pagan scholar burst out laughing and said in a mocking tone, “The bullshit of a jurist of your caliber is tragic! How is it possible that a tree becomes a boat on its own. ” Imam Abu Hanifa (RA) reverently remarked, “My friend, a small boat needs someone to build it and row it, but the vast universe came into existence by itself. Isn’t that pure stupidity and hypocrisy. The pagan scholar was amazed by the wit and logic of Imam Abu Hanifa (RA). He immediately asked for forgiveness and recited Kalima Tayyibah and Kalima Shahadah. Sub-Haanallah!
Contemporary preachers also engage in debate, but their intentions are evil and iniquitous. They boast and brag about their knowledge, carry holy books to debate sites, as if carrying junk to sell at a flea market. Alas! We resort to sacrilege against our own religious scriptures. Sihayi Sittah (Six Books of Reverence) is not intended for trivial disputes but for the revival of the Muslim ummah. The preachers should have bandaged our bruises but they are determined to scratch them to make us bleed.
The Muslim ummah is going through turbulent times around the world. Academic backwardness has reduced the entire ummah to mere puffs of foam although they outnumber the various ethnic groups and other religious minorities. The arrest of logical thinking and reasoning has limited intellectual growth and development within the Ummah. Christians, Jews and others have monopolized the world by dint of their educational hegemony over others. The last two centuries bear witness to the fact that the Muslim world is only busy swallowing whole rams and chickens while others are busy strengthening their laboratories and research institutions. Here we went sliding down the hill. We are deprived of productive citizens and brains.
The intellectual crisis has its reasons deeply rooted in our misinterpretation of the Quran and Hadith. Our preachers and religious speakers have confined the Deen to a few rituals and obligations. Our predecessors and ancestors had set us great benchmarks but we chose the cult of taste buds and bulging bellies. Ibni-Shatir, Bu-Ali Cena, Jabir Bin Hayan and dozens of others have been the idols and role models of our splendid past, but the cheap and ridiculous mindset of our clerics and preachers has hurt the ummah. Such jesters are responsible for the labfaction of the ummah. Such a mindset prompted Muslim scientists to lower the antennae of Turkey’s Takiyuddin Observatory in 1580 when the country was struck by a plague, and these mad preachers attributed the plague to the erection of high antennae of the astronomical observatory. Such an attitude of the guardians of our pulpits has ruined our intellectual and logical faculties, which ultimately led to the decline of an era of glory and a splendid past. Oh ! We have ceased to be reasonable and rational.
The Muslim Ummah is laden with significant manpower, resources and wealth, but it is devoid of critical thinking because religious preachers have misled commoners in recent decades. Pulpits and other religious places should have been the centers of our salvation and educational revival. But unfortunately ! Our nominal religious leaders have been busy stirring up trouble in our masjids. Provocative speeches from religious platforms fanned the flames of enmity, duality and sectarian hatred within the Ummah. The ugly debates have desecrated our revered mosques and places of worship. May the owner of the universe bless us with hidayah!
