Share of Croats in Croatia increases as census results are released
The Croatian Bureau of Statistics published today on its website the final results of the census that was carried out in Croatia in 2021.
According to the 2021 census, the Republic of Croatia has a population of 3,871,833, of which 1,865,129 are men (48.17%) and 2,006,704 are women (51.83%).
Compared to the 2011 Census, the population decreased by 413,056 people or 9.64%.
More Croats since the last census
The results of the 2021 census show that the share of Croats in the country is 91.63%, up from the 2011 census where the share was 90.42%.
Next come the Serbs with 3.20%, compared to 4.36% in 2011. Bosnians were third with 0.62%, followed by Roma (0.46%), Italians (0.36%) and Albanians ( 0.36%), while the share of other members of national minorities is individually less than 0.30%.
The share of people who declared at the regional level is 0.33%, and the number of people who did not want to declare is 0.58%.
95.25% of people declared their mother tongue to be Croatian and 1.16% of people declared their mother tongue to be Serbian. The share of people with another mother tongue is individually less than 1.00%. Of the total population of the Republic of Croatia, 99.24% hold Croatian citizenship, while 0.74% or 28,784 are foreign citizens.
Decline in the number of Catholics
According to religious affiliation, Catholics make up 78.97% of the population, Protestants 0.26%, other Christians 4.84%, Jews 0.01%, Orthodox 3.32%, Eastern religions 0 .9%, other religions 0.96%, Muslims 1.32%, agnostics 1.68%, non-believers and atheists 4.71%, while 1.72% of people did not want answer the question about religion. 2.14% is unknown.
At the last population census in 2011, there were 86% Catholics. The Orthodox just under 4.5% and the Muslims around 1.5%. Only 3.81% of the population declared themselves to be atheists and a further 0.76% were considered agnostic. 2.17% of Croatian citizens did not want to declare their religion.
Overall therefore, according to the last population census, Christians represent a total of 87.39%, whereas in 2011 they were 91.37%. This is a drop of 3.98%.
