Nic Street, Minister of Community Services and Development
The Liberal Government of Tasmania is building a state where every Tasmanian can belong, contribute, achieve and succeed.
Harmony Week 2022 is an opportunity for all of us to celebrate diversity, inclusion, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
This is a week for all of us to reflect on what brings us together and unite us as Tasmanians, and to celebrate our multicultural diversity which contributes to the social, cultural and economic well-being of Tasmania, enriches communities and enhances every aspect of our daily life. daily life.
Tasmania is becoming a dynamic and vibrant society, with a great diversity of cultures, languages and religions, and there is no doubt that our state is a much richer place to live, work, study and raise children. children thanks to its inhabitants. , and their cultural, social and economic contribution to our communities.
In addition to our ongoing peak funding for the Multicultural Council of Tasmania (MCOT), we continue to invest in our multicultural communities, providing:
* $190,000 through our local job creation plan for local people to help Migrant Resource Centers in the South and North to create and expand their existing employment readiness programs for migrants and multicultural;
* $100,000 for a two-year trial of a small business loan program for new businesses in migrant and multicultural communities (in partnership with NILS);
* establish a multicultural hub in the upstate, as a community space for events and gatherings for newly arrived and established migrant communities;
*invest $250,000 in the redevelopment of the Mowbray site of the Migrant Resource Center and $50,000 per year, for two years, to support its operation; and
*provide $20,000 to expand the Migrant Support Service in North West Tasmania.
It is at times like these, as we witness the unfolding crisis in Ukraine, that the importance of Harmony Week is highlighted – we need to support each other, our neighbors and our friends.
We are also ready to play our part should the resettlement of Ukrainians become necessary, and the Prime Minister has written to the Prime Minister asking that any arrival from Ukraine be considered greater than the current humanitarian and refugee supply of the Commonwealth, in order to ensure that these people can seek refuge without compromising other vulnerable people.
The Liberal Government of Tasmania encourages everyone to celebrate what we have here in Tasmania, our shared values of respect, equality and freedom which go beyond our different cultures and which make this state a place where life is so good.
Happy Harmony Week 2022 – no matter where we come from, we all belong.
