Marvel Writer Spits In Fans Face, Doesn’t Care If MCU Erases Character’s Legacy

Marvel Studios’ next release moon knight is coming to Disney+ on March 30, 2022, but it’s easily overshadowed by Marvel’s upcoming Phase Four release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022). The next Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster is set to shatter the Marvel Multiverse as moon knight sets the stage for a darker, grittier, grounded Marvel Universe with Oscar Isaac (star wars) as Marc Spector/Steven Grant/Moon Knight.

Around the time Oscar Isaac was cast as the titular Moon Knight fans, they began to wonder if the MCU would erase Marc Spector’s Jewish heritage. Marc is the son of a rabbiwho would go on to fight anti-Semites and become an atheist – even though he also believed he was the fist of Khonshuthe Egyptian god of the moon.
Now Alan Zelenetz who wrote moon knight (1985) and helped establish Marc Spector as a Jewish superhero said it didn’t matter if Marvel Studios erased that in the MCU. He told an American Jewish newspaper the front:
“They are certainly not related by any origin. All of a sudden, the Jews need to be represented. Moon Knight Must Be Jewish – “Oh We’re Watching Marvel!” The boycott is around the corner. I can already smell the blood in the water! “How could they not make him Jewish?” Oscar Isaac is not Jewish, even though he goes by the name Isaac. And they have an Egyptian director – what’s going on here?’ »

It can be easy for Alan Zelenetz to give Kevin Feige the green light to make changes to the character. But Moon Knight belongs to more artists, writers, and fans than he does. Moon Knight was created by the writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlinthe character first appeared in night werewolf #32 (1975).
And Moon Knight is by far the first time the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been criticized for erasing Jewish culture. Baffling given that the Marvel comics it’s based on were founded by Jewish artists like Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Steve Ditko.
Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) had her Jewish and Romani heritage completely ignored in the MCU. Even Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland) was confirmed Jewish in Marvel Comics, but it’s never mentioned in any of his MCU appearances in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Coming Home (2021). No coming home featured three versions by Peter Parker with additions by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, none confirmed as Jewish.

And Marvel fans care more than Alan Zelenetz. Neil Kleid, who worked on Spider-Man: Kraven’s Last Hunt (2015) shared his disappointment on Twitter:
“But what’s worse is when a guy like #AlanZelenetz arrives – a Jew himself! – and says “oh, who cares? I’ll tell you, Alan: my kids, who have seen every MCU movie/show, are waiting to see themselves portrayed on screen, in a toy, a costume they can wear. Don’t delete our Jewish heroes”

Zelenetz seems concerned that “woke” Marvel fans will try to write off Oscar Isaac for playing a Jewish character. But there was no organized boycott of her casting. Isaac is Jewish with his father side and for many fans, they were more excited for the MCU to finally bring Moon Knight to Disney+ in an authentic way.

The next Marvel Original Series arrives in March. It’s expected to have a more similar tone to Marvel’s Netflix shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. He will be rated TV-14 and co-star Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow. Directed by Mohamed Diab on official description of the series reads as follows:
“Moon Knight follows mild-mannered gift shop worker Steven Grant, who is plagued by power outages and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with the mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge on them, they must navigate their complex identities while immersed in a deadly mystery among the mighty gods of Egypt.
Upcoming releases from Marvel Studios are Ms. Marvel in the summer of 2022, and She-Hulk debut this year. In theatres, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessreleases May 6, followed by Thor: Love and Thunder July 8, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever the 11th of November.
