How can we help Christians who give up the faith? Response from a theologian: Church: Christianity in everyday life

A Bible scholar examines the reasons people give up their Christian faith in order to understand where and how other Christians can help them.

During the “Ask Dr. Brown” show, the team of theologian and biblical scholar Michael L. Brown explained the reasons why so many people are abandoning Christianity. These are available on the First episode from Dr. Brown’s “Line of Fire” podcast on Truth Network on November 16th.

For the second episode Aired the next day, Dr. Brown first emphasized the need to rekindle the preaching of the biblical gospel, which brings about conviction, repentance and change. He pointed out that if a Christian’s primary spiritual regime is to attend church services once a week to hear a sermon, it follows that faith will become superficial.

“Root people in the Word, help people be real disciples. It makes a big, big difference in the long run, ”he said.
Another factor, according to Dr. Brown, is that the majority of Christians don’t feel comfortable asking questions or expressing skepticism about anything. Dr Brown noted that one of the reasons Christians stop questioning is because they themselves are insecure about their beliefs.

This is also why, he said, he spends time responding to inquiries from Jews, Muslims and atheists throughout his show.

“Parents, can I encourage you to cultivate honesty with your children? ” he said. “Say, ‘Hey, if you’re having trouble with something, if you don’t agree with mommy and daddy on it, let’s talk about it. Or if you’re wondering about the reality of the Bible or if your friends laugh at it when you pray, you don’t know if it’s God’s will, let’s talk about it. Its good. Its good.'”

For those in pain, such as those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, Dr Brown advised against offering quick fixes or clichés.

“Let’s not give cheap answers to people who are suffering,” he said. “Don’t give superficial answers when it comes to a lot of people falling.”

Then there is the society children are raised in today, where sex is quite prevalent, whether in movies or games, and the infiltration of LGBTQ propaganda by producers of children’s films like Disney. Dr. Brown offers his book “Has God Failed You?” in this section as a starting point for parents to address key issues surrounding sexuality.

Sex scandals in churches of all faiths have exacerbated the dilemma of Christians abandoning their faith, according to Dr. Brown. In addition to praying for the restoration of the glory of God’s name, Brown advocated for humility and authenticity in the Christian life, as well as welcoming observers.

“Let’s do practical service together. Let’s live the gospel together, then hopefully little by little as they see genuine people around, people living their faith together, people really care, people are willing to sacrifice for the good. others, their confidence is restored. Little by little, they’ll realize, ‘Hey, there really is a Savior. It really changes lives. ‘”

Despite the many threats to the faith today, Brown pointed out that God is still building His church among Jews and Gentiles.

“We have to cultivate discipline and holiness – separation – and we have to teach the forgiving and strengthening grace of God. Otherwise, we will also be swallowed up,” he said.
