Eric Metaxas promises a ‘manic Christian’ America would be fun

History contains a few eras in which militant Christianity enjoyed complete power and none of them were very good for anyone other than the Pope. So when right-wing conspiracy theorist Eric Metaxas asserted at last month’s Faith & Freedom Coalition conference that an evangelical takeover of the United States would benefit everyone, their skepticism could be forgiven. Plus, the outfits would be hideous.
Either way, Metaxas good-naturedly proclaimed in a speech that “this nation was founded by Christians, and the reason we are essentially a Christian nation is that as ‘true Christians’ we believe that we don’t want a theocracy. We want freedom. We want any atheist, any Jew, any Muslim, everyone to be welcome here because it is at the heart of the Christian faith. We cannot impose our faith on anyone. It’s silly.
Simmer in irony for a second.
“Many have done this in the past,” Metaxas continued. “There are a lot of radical Muslims trying to impose their faith on people right now. There are a lot of radical atheists in China and North Korea who are trying to impose their faith on people.
Atheism is – by definition – a lack of faith in a supreme being. It also happens to be based on reason, but whatever.
“A true Christian says, ‘Faith is free.’ Belief in Jesus can never be forced. It is a gift from God, ”explained Metaxas. “So if, if manic Christians took over this country, they would make it safer that everyone was part of this country.” So don’t fear the theocracy, gentlemen.
Metaxas added that such concerns are a “pipe dream”, which he mispronounced, as well as a “mirage”.
No thanks.
